چکیده

We consider MHD waves as a heating source of cool cores of galaxy clusters. In particular, we focus on transverse waves (Alfvén waves), because they can propagate a longer distance than longitudinal waves (sound waves). Using MHD simulations, we found that the transverse waves can stably heat a cool core if the wave period is large enough (& 10 yr). Moreover, the longitudinal waves that are created as a by-product of the nonlinear evolution of the transverse waves could be observed as the ’ripples’ found in cool cores. Detecting Sound-Wave-Like Surface Brightness Ripples in Cluster Cores

We investigate the observational requirements for the detection of sound-wave-like features in galaxy cluster cores. We calculate the effect of projection on the observed wave amplitude, and find that the projection factor depends only weakly on the underlying cluster properties but strongly on the wavelength of the sound waves, with the observed amplitude being reduced by a factor ∼ 5 for 5 kp...

Tsunamis in Galaxy Clusters: Heating of Cool Cores by Acoustic Waves

Using an analytical model, we show that acoustic waves generated by turbulent motion in intracluster medium effectively heat the central region of a socalled “cooling flow” cluster. We assume that the turbulence is generated by substructure motion in a cluster or cluster mergers. Our analytical model can reproduce observed density and temperature profiles of several clusters. We also show that ...

An Observationally Motivated Framework for AGN Heating of Cluster Cores

The cooling-flow problem is a long-standing puzzle that has received considerable recent attention, in part because the mechanism that quenches cooling flows in galaxy clusters is likely to be the same mechanism that sharply truncates the high end of the galaxy luminosity function. Most of the recent models for halting cooling in clusters have focused on AGN heating, but the actual heating mech...

Beyond the Cool Core: The Formation of Cool Core Galaxy Clusters

Why do some clusters have cool cores while others do not? In this paper, cosmological simulations, including radiative cooling and heating, are used to examine the formation and evolution of cool core (CC) and non-cool core (NCC) clusters. Numerical CC clusters at z = 0 accreted mass more slowly over time and grew enhanced cool cores via hierarchical mergers; when late major mergers occurred, t...

Why Do Only Some Galaxy Clusters Have Cool Cores?

Flux-limited X-ray samples indicate that about half of rich galaxy clusters have cool cores. Why do only some clusters have cool cores while others do not? In this paper, cosmological N-body + Eulerian hydrodynamic simulations, including radiative cooling and heating, are used to address this question as we examine the formation and evolution of cool core (CC) and non-cool core (NCC) clusters. ...
